10 Days to First Cut, and no editing done!

I have finished filming, however I am very far behind on editing as i have yet to start, however next week is half term and i will be in school every day (bar Friday, if all goes well) editing my production. I hope to spend no more than 3 hours each day, meaning that a total 12 hours will be spent. I hope that this is more than an adequate amount of time to edit, and if not extra hours can be put in on Friday or Monday morning.

Music

Tomorrow I hope to add my music to my production. I have two tracks, one for the beginning scene and the second bridge scene, and another for the walking scene.

Reshooting the fall

After deliberation, I decided that I wasn’t happy with the second bridge scene and decided to reshoot. After the feedback from the first cut, the sounds wasn’t very high quality anyway, and I wanted to change the way the fall was presented, so tomorrow I will be gathering the actors again and reshooting.

First Cut feedback

After viewing my first cut, the class and teachers have given my feedback, as stated below:
1. I need to either re-shoot or over dub my bridge scenes as there is too much background noise, making it hard to hear what the actors are saying.
2. I need to make the telephone conversation more realistic by recording the sound of the voices through the telephone.
3. The pace is very good, as lots of short films seem rushed however this is not and has good flow.
4. I need to make some parts of the sound louder as it seems to quiet.
5. I need to correct a match on action error in the last bridge scene.
6. The falling off the bridge would be more effective should it be in slow motion.

Feedback notes

To put together the sequence of shots to make the narrative flow
Consider using white fades for the flash backs
Use the ‘echo’ effect only part through the argument to build up tension
Consider using the black and white effect for the flash backs
The sound will need to be normalised so that it is consistent all the way through
You need to use or shoot some more shots in the argument to build up the variation of shots

9 Days to First Cut, and no editing done!

Last scenes shot

Today I managed to shoot the last half of the telephone scene in the morning, and the Walking scene in the afternoon. I did it this way round as there was still fog, however it was not as dense as the last few days. This may upset continuity; however I am hoping that in editing I will be able to manipulate the image.

Fog

Due to the Fog, I was unable to shoot today, which sets us a day behind. I was planning to shoot the walking scene today, and due to Kate being unavailable I couldn’t even shoot the telephone scene Its been foggy for the last two days, so fingers crossed it will clear by tomorrow otherwise it will be very hard to find the time to shoot again.

First Half Of telephone scene

Robs half of the telephone scene was shot today, where we did the first half at his house, and then drove to mine to do the second. It seemed more sense doing it chronologically, as I think the acting flowed better this way

A productive day

Today I managed to completely shoot the second bridge scene, the breakup scene, and the group scene. It took us 5 hours in total, with the majority of the time moving from location to location and setting up the camera. This now leaves me with just the walking and telephone scenes left to shoot.

The First Scene and last scene is filmed!

As Rob was available for three lessons today, I chose to take advantage of our free time and shoot the first and last scenes. As it was only him required, we made a lot of progress in the three hours and just managed to complete the scenes. Although it was a tight squeeze, as I had to drive to Robs (two towns away) to get his costume as neither of us were expecting to film, we were very pleased with the footage we shot.

Condensation detected!!! *_*

A full day of filming was scheduled for today, however when we got to the location, the camera decided to alert me with an error message reading “condensation detected”. This was very disappointing and annoying, as I had the actors together for the second bridge scene, and am running behind due to rob being sick. I was unable to get a camera from school as the school was shut today, so I am going to have to reschedule filming to next Wednesday as that is the only day all actors are available.

Running Behind

I am now a two weeks behind my schedule, as I had planned to have my filming done by now, however it took a lot longer than anticipated to plan my project. Filming will start on Friday, and hopefully will be finished by the following Friday.

Actors dropping out

Unfortunately, with one week left to go before filming, two actors have had to drop out. Luke has come down with mumps, and is therefore unable to leave the house, and Marianna has prior commitments that make her unable to travel to Ware to film. As a result, I have asked two actors to fill in their place, Kate Harley-Chambers will now be playing the role of Jemma Follen, and David Horridge will be playing the role of James Staffen.

Last two Locations, Locations, Locations...

I have now found the last locations, which are below:

Walking scene – this will be in and around an area of a local village called “Cold Christmas”. The long winding paths are good to show that Craig is taking a long journey to Jade, and he is prepared to walk that far for her.

Other Half of Telephone Scene – this will be filmed in my kitchen as the lighting and sound quality is adequate.

Location, Location, Location...

So far I have found locations for the following scenes:

All Bridge Scenes -  A quite traffic free bridge over a busy road (A10). The bridge has railings over small drops onto grass (no more than 1 ft) which means I can realistically create the effect of Mary falling off, without actually causing any danger to my actors.

The Group Scene – originally set outside a bus stop, this proved unsuccessful as the only bus stops around the town are busy with mainly youthers. So instead, we will be shooting this on the wall outside my house, with the group waiting for a lift.

The Break-up Scene – This will be recorded at my house in my living room, as I can black out the room using big curtains and use only artificial lighting to create a tense lighting effect

Half the Telephone Scene – The opening of this scene (up to rob walking up the stiars) will be filmed at robs house, then when he walks into a bedroom he will actually be a bedroom in my house.

The locations left to find are:

Walking scene
Other half of telephone scene

Opening sequence music

As I am unable to use copyrighted material in my production, I’m composing my own short piano piece for the opening sequence. The feel I want is similar to the music currently being shown on the O2 simplicity advert, below.

This is England ‘86

Watching the opening sequence of This is England ‘86 really inspired me as to how I’m going to create my opening sequence. There is no dialogue in the scene where Shaun is standing in the rain, holding his hand out, and the only sound that can be heard is soft piano music. This Is effective in showing sadness, and that’s the emotion I want to be prominent in my opening sequence.
And below is the video for the music that is playing, however in the programme it is only a small snipit of the 7 minute song that is played.

Lilja 4 ever

After watching lilja 4 ever, I was inspired as it begins, and ends, on a bridge, much like mine. Below is the first few minutes of the film from youtube.

Production Schedule

In order to stay on track and ensure i have everything done for the final deadline, I have composed a production schedule. This will let me know if i am falling behind and how much work I need to do to catch up.

The Production Pitch

Below is my pitch for the production.

Feedback

People have suggesested that althought the storyline of the film is good, there is perhaps too much to fit into 5 minutes, and have suggested that i change the format.
Other comments are that the artistic style is good, but i need to be careful to ensure the plot stays accurate.

Because of theses comments, i have decided to alter the storyline. It will be based more around the man who the girl broke up with, and his story about how he feels as opposed to how she feels. This wya i feel i will be able to fit more in without the film feeling like its being squeezed into five minutes.
